MIRA roots itself in the lyrical style of Tennessee Williams, plumbing the psychological depths and rich characters typical of his work. An urgent longing drives a young woman to seek relief from her pressing emptiness for the first time. She finds an unexpected friendship to abate her loneliness in a shared love of poetry. MIRA explores the difficult beauty often found in an uncertain future. This physical performance is spun from a love of the Southern Gothic, and writers such as Lillian Hellman and John Steinbeck.
MIRA brings together artists across disciplines to explore the work of Tennessee Williams with a contemporary eye. Expanding the understanding of contemporary performance and theater, Bare Portland seeks innovative forms of storytelling in each performance. MIRA features choreography by Liz Pettingill and direction by Tarra Bouchard. Each audience member has the choice to listen to various selected audio experiences that weave rich images, with text and narrative. Attendees should bring a smart-phone or WIFI-capable device and headphones (or share with a neighbor!) A limited number of headphones will be available for sale at each performance.
